editor, INSIGHT KIDS

Insight Editions is looking for a talented Editor to be a part of our Insight Kids children’s division. This position will develop and acquire licensed and some non-licensed books and series for ages 0-12, primarily working in fiction and fictional worlds. At least 3 years of recent experience acquiring and editing illustrated children’s books, with an emphasis on preschool publishing, is essential. You will be the visionary behind each project and responsible for keeping everyone involved, engaged, and on schedule. An ability to manage many moving parts on a variety of projects while collaborating with authors and illustrators is required. This Editor will have experience discovering new authors, developing new formats, and assisting in the creative vision behind each book. Some experience with adult titles would be a benefit, but not a requirement. Experience with licensed books is a plus.


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience developing and editing children’s (ages 0-12) books across multiple formats including board books, picture books, card decks, and other paper-based formats. Experience with pop-up books is a plus
  • A proven history of acquiring, developing, and championing successful children’s publications with commercial appeal
  • Experience managing multiple schedules and meeting deadlines
  • Experience managing budgets and P&Ls within the publishing environment
  • Ability to manage a team of freelancers and work collaboratively with internal editorial and design teams
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing needs and an ability to liaise across departments and develop effective sales materials
  • Exceptional editorial and writing skills
  • Strong familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience working with licensors and routing approvals is a plus.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Acquire and edit approximately 12-15 projects per year
  • Manage projects from ideation to finished books, working closely with internal production editorial, design, and production teams
  • Research and communicate industry trends and develop new book concepts and formats
  • Work closely with editorial, production editorial, design teams and all creative service teams to ensure manuscripts and sales materials are delivered as early as possible to maximize long lead media and sales and marketing schedules
  • Collaborate with design team on design aesthetics, illustrations, and/or photography for all projects
  • Write sales, marketing, and cover copy
  • Develop relationships with authors, freelancers, and agents
  • Consult with sales and marketing, and oversee the development of special sales materials requests and marketing collateral
  • Create project budgets and manage schedules

editorial assistant

Insight Editions seeks an Editorial Assistant to provide support to the Insight editorial team. We have a thorough training program that provides hands-on learning throughout the editorial process. Our publishing program includes titles representing many of the world’s largest pop-culture brands, from Harry Potter to DC Comics to Disney. The role is a great opportunity for a candidate to learn the editorial process for a global publishing company that publishes across many formats. The assistant will report to the Senior Editor and collaborate closely with creative services team members within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.


Qualifications:

  • Assist the Executive Editor and editorial team on all aspects of acquisitions and project management of Insight Edition titles including brainstorming, research, concept development, creation of pitch materials, writing title outlines, rights & clearance tracking, licensor approval tracking, updating title information in FileMaker and distribution portals.
  • Assist in the creation/gathering of information for marketing and sales collateral, including sales copy, sell sheets, catalog copy, sales decks, and brochures.
  • Interact with professionalism with authors, artists, designers, filmmakers, licensors, agents, in-house staff in all departments of Insight Editions and, on occasion, with licensors.
  • Gather and sort assets for use in sales materials and book layouts, create book maps.
  • Search and analyze competitive market research and compile reports.
  • Assist with ongoing database management projects.
  • Take accurate notes in meetings and distribute to teams.
  • Track project development costs, process invoices for approval.
  • Perform general administrative duties, such as managing ongoing meetings, emailing updates, tracking approvals with licensors.


Key Responsibilities:

  • BA in English or a related field.
  • 1 to 2 years editorial experience a plus, preferably within a publishing environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A passion for books and writing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.

Insight Editions is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and collaborative EDITOR to join the gaming, music, and sports division. The Insight Editions publishing team is enthusiastic about the licensing brands we represent and committed to creating content that connects fans and readers with the most fun and innovative pop culture books in the country. In this position, you will assist in acquiring books and will manage high volume and high visibility projects throughout the entire editorial process. This role will oversee a variety of publishing formats across multiple brands including Bethesda, Riot Games, Pokémon, Minecraft, and other sports, music, and game brands. Experience with licensed publishing is a plus. In this role, you will work closely with in-house design, production, sales, and marketing teams to successfully shape, shepherd, and launch innovative product releases across multiple formats. At least 3-5 years of recent experience editing books is essential. Qualified applicants must be extremely detail-focused, and able to manage multiple deadlines, expectations, and projects while collaborating closely with authors, packagers, and freelancers. We are looking for an accomplished editor who is enthusiastic about entertainment, gaming, and/or sports brands.

freelance photographer/videographer

Insight Editions is seeking a skilled and creative freelance (1099) photographer/videographer to join our team and help bring our products to life. This individual will capture high-quality photography and video for our books, products, and projects while also assisting in developing a functional in-house studio space. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, efficient, and has a keen eye for detail and experience in product photography.


Responsibilities:

  • Capture white box photography of books and products following our standard operating procedure, with quick turnaround times.
  • Create both short video clips (20 seconds) optimized for platforms like Amazon, as well as longer promotional videos highlighting book features, set to music.
  • Film and produce candid behind-the-scenes videos and photography to authentically showcase our team, creative process, and collaborations with staff, creators, authors, and brand partners.
  • Edit external video content provided by authors and collaborators.
  • Assess existing equipment and empty space in the office to design and build a functional studio setup.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure all visual content aligns with brand standards and marketing goals.
  • Maintain organization and manage deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously.


Requirements:

  • Proven experience in photography and videography, including white box/product photography and candid, behind-the-scenes photography.
  • Proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc.).
  • Ability to film and produce high-quality videos, including interviews and feature-focused content.
  • Strong attention to detail and creative vision for compelling visuals.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to ensure quick project turnarounds.
  • Must be local to the San Rafael area and available to work on-site 2-3 days per week.
  • Ability to travel (very rarely and with a long notice time) to shoot content on location locally and nationally.
  • Comfortable assessing and utilizing in-house equipment and space to create a functional studio setup.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with product photograph and interview videography.
  • Ability to work independently while also being an effective team player.
  • Familiarity with creating content for e-commerce platforms like Amazon.
  • Familiarity with creating content for social media like TikTok or Instagram.
