Book Designer

Insight Editions seeks a Graphic Designer to assist in designing our books, stationery, and various other consumer products from research and concept to design and production. Our publishing program includes titles from many of the world’s largest brands and pop-culture staples, from Harry Potter to DC Comics to Disney.


This is a great opportunity for anyone who has experience in book design, has a love for pop-culture, and wants to learn about the creative process in a highly successful publishing and entertainment company alongside a passionate, creative team. This position reports to the Art Director.


Primary Responsibility: Design and layout of books and stationery.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a design related field.
  • 3-4 years of four-color trade book layout and design experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Must be adaptable and flexible with an ability to multitask, and a strong attention to detail.
  • Illustration skill is a plus.
  • Experience with 3D rendering software is a plus.


Responsibilities:

  • Design, layout, and production of book covers and interiors.
  • Design of various other products like candles, stationery, and greeting cards.
  • Moodboards, market research, and color proofing.
  • Sales materials development such as creating mock covers and spreads, trimming and assembling materials for book fairs.

editorial assistant

Insight Editions seeks an Editorial Assistant to provide support to the Insight editorial team. We have a thorough training program that provides hands-on learning throughout the editorial process. Our publishing program includes titles representing many of the world’s largest pop-culture brands, from Harry Potter to DC Comics to Disney. The role is a great opportunity for a candidate to learn the editorial process for a global publishing company that publishes across many formats. The assistant will report to the Senior Editor and collaborate closely with creative services team members within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.


Qualifications:

  • Assist the Executive Editor and editorial team on all aspects of acquisitions and project management of Insight Edition titles including brainstorming, research, concept development, creation of pitch materials, writing title outlines, rights & clearance tracking, licensor approval tracking, updating title information in FileMaker and distribution portals.
  • Assist in the creation/gathering of information for marketing and sales collateral, including sales copy, sell sheets, catalog copy, sales decks, and brochures.
  • Interact with professionalism with authors, artists, designers, filmmakers, licensors, agents, in-house staff in all departments of Insight Editions and, on occasion, with licensors.
  • Gather and sort assets for use in sales materials and book layouts, create book maps.
  • Search and analyze competitive market research and compile reports.
  • Assist with ongoing database management projects.

editor, Gaming & Sports

Insight Editions is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and collaborative EDITOR, GAMING & SPORTS to join the gaming, music, and sports division. The Insight Editions publishing team is enthusiastic about the licensing brands we represent and committed to creating content that connects fans and readers with the most fun and innovative pop culture books in the country. In this position, you will assist in acquiring books and will manage high volume and high visibility projects throughout the entire editorial process. This role will oversee a variety of publishing formats across multiple brands including Bethesda, Riot Games, Pokémon, Minecraft, and other sports, music, and game brands. Experience with licensed publishing is a plus. In this role, you will work closely with in-house design, production, sales, and marketing teams to successfully shape, shepherd, and launch innovative product releases across multiple formats. At least 3-5 years of recent experience editing books is essential. Qualified applicants must be extremely detail-focused, and able to manage multiple deadlines, expectations, and projects while collaborating closely with authors, packagers, and freelancers. We are looking for an accomplished editor who is enthusiastic about entertainment, gaming, and/or sports brands.

The Global Head of Production is accountable for the direction, motivation, and financial impact of their team and department. This position oversees Production Managers, in the US and UK, by providing leadership and expert knowledge of the processes, techniques, and technology necessary to complete the work with unsurpassed quality. Attracting, developing, and utilizing the most creative production talent available is necessary to ensure the highest quality production standards have been met for each project. This person is accountable for the overall quality of work, ensuring goals are met and projects are delivered on time and on budget.


We are looking for a production leader that has 10+ years of experience across print and digital platforms. They have a large network of print and supply chain service providers across several continents. They are a creative problem solver whose production expertise allows them to guide complex development efforts across all production types. Someone with strong leadership skills is necessary to help oversee the Production Department’s activities, as they are accountable for the overall quality of work.


They are a great communicator, mentor, and project manager with an innate ability to 'get things done'. This person will take a very proactive role in project development efforts, helping to advise project teams on best practices, process, schedules, and pricing, while building strong and resilient relationships along the way. They evolve operational processes and workflow documentation, while overseeing all aspects of the project life cycle from concept to delivery.


This person will work closely with the development team in conjunction with the production leads to manage current workloads as well as forecasting incoming projects to secure adequate resources. The role is based in San Rafael, California and includes a relocation package.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

We are seeking a Marketing & Publicity Manager to oversee the development, planning, and execution of campaigns for titles published under the Weldon Owen, W-O Kids, Insight Studio, and Mandala Earth imprints while also developing and executing all aspects of in-depth, creative trade and consumer publicity campaigns for major brands and individual titles.


Weldon Owen’s food and drink list boasts a highly influential Michelin Star-winning chefs, James Beard-winning food writers, and culinary trendsetters. Our food and drink team have a passion for brining under-represented cuisine from around the world to our readers and for those who share the same goal of publishing eco-friendly and vegan cookbooks in a meaningful way to support sustainable living and promote conscious eating habits.

The Marketing & Publicity Manager will mentor two direct reports, a Marketing Associate and an Associate Publicist, and be hands-on executing their own list of individual publicity campaigns for lead titles, top-tier brands, and influential authors as well as spearheading Insight Editions’ presence at trade, consumer, and fan conventions.


Responsibilities include:

  • Become the go-to contact for specific licensed brands and publishing categories internally with editors, publishers, sales, and other departments and externally with licensors, brand owners, authors, agents, and creators.
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Marketing & Publicity to establish year-long initiatives across new releases, recent on-sales, and backlist titles falling under the same brand or category.
  • Lead effective and efficient weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly meetings with brands and licensors including setting agendas, organizing distribution of post-meeting notes, and overseeing internal follow up.
  • Seek out third party partnership opportunities with civic groups, foundations, educational institutes, and corporations related to Weldon Owen’s publishing categories for potential speaking events, cross promotions, bulk sales, and more.
  • Develop D2C and Lead/Gen initiatives in every campaign to better connect with consumers.
  • As title publicist, develop, plan, and execute publicity campaigns for lead titles and high-priority partners including booking national and local media, developing relationships with top podcasts within the Weldon Owen publishing categories, and organizing author events.
  • Contribute publicity perspective at key internal and external meetings with editors, sales, authors, agents, brand representatives, and licensors.
  • Maintain established and develop new relationships with national and local media, booksellers, librarians, and social bold-faced names in categories Weldon Owen publishes.
  • Oversee the publicity-side of consumer conventions (San Diego Comic Con, Emerald City Comic Con, Evo) and trade shows (Children’s Institute, ALA, fall regional trade shows).
  • Create dynamic author events for new releases and key backlist authors.
  • Mentor two direct reports: a Marketing Associate and Associate Publicist each working on a full list of titles under the Weldon Owen publishing group.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5+ years of marketing and/or publicity experience on the entertainment, lifestyle, popular culture, illustrated nonfiction side of book publishing. Publicity-focused candidates will take priority.

Social Media Responsibilities:

  • Lead corporate storytelling across Insight Editions social media platforms including creation of compelling original content related to the categories we specialize in.

  • Create digital graphics and video assets adhering to corporate or licensor/brand style guides and templates.
