Rights Executive

We are expanding our team and looking for an enthusiastic Rights Executive to join our Subsidiary Rights Department to help develop new licensing and co-edition business mainly in the CEE territories across all our imprints. Including Insight Editions, Weldon Owen, Mandala, Earth Aware, Insight Workshop and associated publishing imprints.

The Foreign Rights Executive reports to the Head of European Rights and to the Associate Director and responsibilities will include handling CEE territories, database management, pricing analysis, and the creation of sales and marketing materials.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Head of Rights in managing co-edition and rights sales in CEE territories
  • Represent the company at book fairs and assist with book fair preparation
  • Undertake business trips as and when required
  • Maintain existing customer relationships and develop new ones to support business growth
  • Research the markets and stay informed about industry trends and developments
  • Maintain contact and sales database
  • Maintain sales materials. Liaise with marketing and editorial to prepare materials specifically for foreign rights use. Update and maintain rights presentations materials. Update WeTransfer links for all titles
  • Maintain and input foreign projections


In Addition:

  • Liaise with editorial, design and production departments
  • Assist with fulfilling material requests from publishers and sub-agents
  • Research publishing and sales trends worldwide
  • Assist the rights team with additional tasks as needed
  • Request co-edition prices on behalf of the team

  • Fluency in a language of the territories handled; desired but not required
  • Experience using CRM and Production Management software; desired but not essential as training will be provided

  • 1+ year experience preferably in the rights department but will also consider candidates with experience in other departments.

Senior Book Designer, Weldon Owen

This position is being offered as an on-site, temporary, full-time assignment with an anticipated duration of approximately eight (8) to ten (10) months. The role is structured as a temporary-to-hire opportunity and may be evaluated for potential transition into a regular, ongoing position. Any such transition will be contingent upon operational and business needs, as well as the employee’s satisfactory performance.


We are looking for someone with at least 5+ years of experience as a Designer in a publishing house, with experience collaborating with a team, managing outside contractors, and being responsible for the creative execution of the publishing plan for at least one division of a company. The ideal candidate is a motivated and creative individual with book design experience who possesses strong skills in design, layout, photography, typography, illustration, and people management. This position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including conceptualizing and executing the creation of high-quality books and assisting the Art Director in product photo shoots. Experience with food and drink is a plus!


This position reports to the Art Director of Weldon Owen, in collaboration with the Creative Director of the Lifestyle division.


Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience performing design work, preferably in a book publishing environment
  • Must have expert proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, specifically with InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Experience with color proofing, as well as the organization, planning, and on-site photoshoot art direction experience, is preferred, but not required.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with all members of the team on the development of assigned projects from conception to publication
  • The development, conceptualization, and execution of book cover and packaging design for assigned projects
  • Responsible for the design and execution of book interiors through the process, from manuscript to bound book
  • Assist in training, and mentoring junior staff on design best practices and internal processes
  • Conduct research as needed on photography, art, and illustration
  • Create mock-ups and sales materials as needed for trade shows and related events
  • Collaborate and partner with other department staff to ensure accurate product development through the final book/product
  • Assist in the hiring and management of freelance designers, photographers, illustrators, and letterers
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of industry trends and best practices
  • Color-proof departmental projects
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and on-site design direction support of photoshoots.
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 5+ years of experience as a designer in a publishing house
  • A passion for books with experience in book publishing
  • Expert proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), and Mac OS
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and programs is a plus
  • Experience with FileMaker is a plus
  • Knowledge of food and drink, sports and fitness, popular science, craft and design, education and pop-culture
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to prioritize, multitask, manage resources across multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Highly motivated, productive, and detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills, and able to prioritize projects and meet deadlines.
  • Photographic eye and a creative, outside-the-box approach to photo and art selection
  • Ability to provide creative solutions to design challenges
  • Strong knowledge of prepress processes and print production
  • Color proofing experience is a plus
  • Proficiency and knowledge of project management and best practices
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and to remain focused on goals while navigating unforeseen changes and critical feedback
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with all levels of employees and management
